Themes that emerged from parent interviews, lessons learned since 2016, and how these lessons might inform future service will be offered. FR 9:30AM-10:00AM Westin, Galleria Tech G 4073 SLP LITP Introductory Prof Educ An Early Intervention Library Lending Program: Trends in a Community With Limited Resources Leila Regio, Cal St LA; Ellen Turner, Cal St LA; Gabriela Simon-Cereijido, Cal St LA; Erica Ellis, Cal St LA This project examines book borrowing trends and survey responses of families who participated in a lending library program at an early intervention center in Southern California. Data from 42 families were analyzed. Survey responses and data collected via The Classroom Organizer app were used to examine access to books and identify trends. Preliminary analysis and clinical implications will be discussed. FR 5:00PM-5:30PM Westin, Galleria Tech C 4074 GI LPI Introductory Prof Educ Conflict Resolution when Working with Interdisciplinary Teams, Families & Patients Theresa Dawson, BrainLink Lab Conflict can have a positive effect such as yielding new insights that lead to innovative thinking and developments in the workplace. A conflict resolution method will be presented whereby clinicians can manage conflict using principled negotiation thereby constructively exploring different points of view while making decisions and searching for creative solutions with favorable results. FR 5:30PM-6:00PM Westin, Galleria Tech C 4075 GI LPI Introductory Prof Educ HIPAA in Mayberry: The Secret to Keeping Confidentiality in a Small Town Heather Schieffler, Southeastern Louisiana U; Aimee Adams, Southeastern Louisiana U This presentation explores rules set by US legislation: Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) which mandates protection of an individual’s medical information. HIPAA includes Title I: access to health care, portability, and renew-ability, Title II: administrative simplification and the Privacy Rule. As health care providers, SLPs must adhere to HIPAA, even in rural towns with tight-knit communities (ASHA, 2016). FR 1:30PM-2:00PM Westin, Galleria Tech D 4076 SLP MSD Intermediate Research Motor Programming Treatment of Lexical Stress & Segmentation in Childhood Apraxia of Speech Hilary Miller, U of New Hampshire; Kirrie Ballard, U of Sydney; Jenna Campbell, U of New Hampshire; Semra Aytur, U of New Hampshire; Amy Plante, U of New Hampshire; Donald Robin, U of New Hampshire Children with apraxia of speech (CAS) require intensive therapy. We studied 12 children with CAS using Treatment for Establishing Motor Program Organization (TEMPO). TEMPO is structured using principles of motor learning (PML) and has children practice mutisyllabic nonsense words. Data were collected pre-treatment, immediately post-treatment and at a one month retention period. Children improved on treated and untreated stimuli. FR 2:30PM-3:00PM Westin, Galleria Tech D 4077 SLP MSD Intermediate Research Factors Contributing to Communication Difficulties in Patients With Progressive Apraxia of Speech Rene Utianski, Mayo Clinic; Joseph Duffy, Mayo Clinic; Heather Clark, Mayo Clinic; Edythe Strand, Mayo Clinic; Jennifer Whitwell, Mayo Clinic; Keith Josephs, Mayo Clinic The “Motor Speech Disorders Severity Rating Scale (MSD-SR),” an adapted version of the “ALS Severity Scale,” is intended to index functional speech impairment. This study explored its relationship to other clinical measures in 68 patients with Progressive Apraxia of Speech. Results suggest the MSD- SR is a robust measure and reflects the severity of apraxia of speech and concomitant dysarthria. FR 3:00PM-3:30PM Westin, Galleria Tech F 4078 SLP SSDC Intermediate Research Investigating Treatment Dose Frequency for Children With Speech Sound Disorders & Motor Speech Involvement (SSD-MSI) Aravind Namasivayam, U of Toronto; Francesca Granata, U of Toronto; Margit Pukonen, The Speech & Stuttering Inst; Debra Goshulak, The Speech & Stuttering Inst; Robert Kroll, The Speech & Stuttering Inst; Pascal van Lieshout, U of Toronto We investigated optimal treatment dose frequency for the Motor Speech Treatment Protocol (MSTP) in 48 children with speech sound disorders and motor speech involvement. Differences in frequency of intervention (1 vs. 2 sessions/wk for a 10-week block) did not result in any statistical differences. Only marginal clinical advantages (< 4% change in intelligibility) were noted with the 10 extra sessions. FR 8:00AM-8:30AM Westin, Carlton 4079 SLP SWAL Introductory Prof Educ Breastfeeding in Black Families: Building Yourself as an Advocate SLP Anastasia Johnson, Shepherd Ctr; April Anderson, Nat'l Therapy Ctr; Audrey Latimore, Texas Children's Hosp Despite efforts to reduce it, racial disparities of breastfeeding among Black children in the United States continue to persist. More frequently, SLPs are in the position to assist Black mothers in breastfeeding, and may require additional supports. This program sets out to provide supports through review of global breastfeeding initiatives, review of breast physiology and strategies for culturally sensitive treatment. FR 8:30AM-9:00AM Westin, Carlton 4080 SLP SWAL Intermediate Prof Educ Dysphagia in Inflammatory Myopathy: Clinical Characteristics & Prognostic Implications Ashley Carnes, U of Texas Med Branch; Colleen Hickey, U of Texas Med Branch Inflammatory myopathies are rare, chronic diseases which may present with dysphagia. With identification of oropharyngeal dysphagia, there are significant prognostic implications including heightened mortality. Through review of existing literature and presentation of case studies, we will explore how dysphagia may present and affect these patients, as well as highlight the importance of the SLP on the multidisciplinary care team. FR 9:00AM-9:30AM Westin, Carlton 4081 SLP SWAL Introductory Prof Educ The Negative Impact of Bilateral Thalamic DBS on Swallowing in Essential Tremor & Its Management Emily Wang, Rush U Med Ctr; Morgan Corich, Rush U; Alyssa Godek, Rush U Med Ctr; Leonard Verhagen Metman, Rush U Med Ctr Essential Tremor (ET) is a common movement disorder in adults. They are postural and action tremors, rhythmic with a frequency of 4-7 Hz. The tremor is mostly in hands, head and larynx, interrupting movement such as swallowing and speaking. We report a case of ET with the patient presenting stimulation-induced dysphagia and discuss how the case was successfully managed.
