202 • 2018 ASHA CONVENTION PROGRAM BOOK As of July 31, 2018 LITERACY ASSESSMENT AND INTERVENTION (SLP) 1969 Phonological Awareness Training Program: A Speech- Language Pathologist’s Tool for Training Teachers SA 3:45PM-4:45PM / CC, 211 (Lvl 2) Intermediate; Prof Educ AUTHOR(S): Jayne Jaskolski, Jayne Jaskolski Consulting; Maura Moyle, Marquette U The Phonological Awareness Training Program: A Speech-Language Pathologist’s Tool for Training Teachers (PATP) will be presented, including lesson demonstrations and video illustrations of instructional sessions. PATP is a professional development training program designed to be implemented by SLPs. The purpose of PATP is to improve educators’ own knowledge and skills so they can provide high-quality phonological awareness classroom instruction. SPEECH SOUND DISORDERS IN NORMAL-HEARING CHILDREN (SLP) 1970 The Childhood Intelligibility Assessment: A Translational Clinical Research Project SA 3:45PM-4:45PM / CC, 256 (Lvl 2) Introductory; Prof Educ AUTHOR(S): Teadora Taddeo, Vanderbilt U; A. Zebedee White, Vanderbilt U; Alexandra Redfern, Vanderbilt U; Clare Melanie Schuele, Vanderbilt U Assessing speech intelligibility is ubiquitous of speech-language pathology, and SLPs often use commercially available, single word articulation measures to determine intelligibility. Despite their popularity, measures like the Goldman- Fristoe Test of Articulation fail to capture an ecologically valid representation of a child’s speech. To combat this problem, we created an evidenced-based, time-efficient measure of percent consonants correct in connected speech. SWALLOWING/FEEDING AND ASSOCIATED DISORDERS (SLP) 1971 Ask the SLP Experts’ Grand Rounds: Troubleshooting & Managing Patients Following Tracheostomy & Mechanical Ventilation SA 3:45PM-4:45PM / CC, 210A (Lvl 2) Intermediate; Prof Educ AUTHOR(S): Kristin King, Passy Muir, Inc; Marta Kazandjian, Silvercrest Ctr for Nursing & Rehab/New York-Presbyterian Queens; Beth Solomon, NIH; Cheryl Tansley, Gaylord Specialty Healthcare This session will allow SLPs to interact with noted experts who work with patients following tracheostomy. This specially designed session will provide brief presentations on current research and treatment strategies with case studies and will then coalesce with an extensive question/answer opportunity, so SLPs can “ask the experts.” Ask questions about what you’ve always wanted to know. 1972 Improving Value of Speech- Language Pathology Services Through Demonstrated Quality of Dysphagia Care SA 3:45PM-4:45PM / CC, 204AB (Lvl 2) Intermediate; Prof Educ AUTHOR(S): Marni Simon, Connecticut Children’s Med Ctr; Emily Mayfield, Mercy Med Ctr; Martin Brodsky, Johns Hopkins U Balancing costs and clinical outcomes with patient function and satisfaction is difficult. This session will provide updated health care policies and expectations from insurers and assist in: 1) identifying and qualifying gaps in services provision, 2) creating and implementing a plan for department/facility change, and 3) assessing administrative outcomes. 1973 Maturation of the Gastrointestinal Tract: Impact on Feeding & Swallowing in Preterm Infants SA 3:45PM-4:45PM / CC, 210B (Lvl 2) Intermediate; Prof Educ AUTHOR(S): Jennifer Pusins, Nova Southeastern U; Abrar Alduraibi, King Fahad Med City Clinicians working with preterm infants with feeding and swallowing difficulties require specialized knowledge of pre-to post-natal anatomical and physiological development to provide developmentally supportive care and optimize health related outcomes. Clinical competency in application of multi-system aspects of development allows the clinician to implement a holistic approach to feeding/ swallowing and to provide recommendations that facilitate optimal outcomes. 1974 Ready To Eat? Training Caregivers to Feed Children With Complex Medical Needs SA 3:45PM-4:45PM / CC, 206AB (Lvl 2) Intermediate; Prof Educ AUTHOR(S): Marianne Gellert-Jones, HMS Sch for Children with Cerebral Palsy; Julie Maurer, HMS Sch for Children with Cerebral Palsy This session aims to provide a framework for attendees to employ in order to facilitate improved caregiver training across multiple environments for those engaged in feeding children with complex medical needs. Discussion will include benefits of providing caregiver training and the introduction of materials that will assist attendees in developing comprehensive feeding support plans for the children they serve. VESTIBULAR/BALANCE ISSUES ACROSS THE LIFESPAN (AUD) 1975 Vestibular & Audiometric Evaluation Outcomes in a Niemann-Pick Disease Type C (NPC) Research Cohort SA 3:45PM-4:45PM / CC, 106 (Lvl 1) Intermediate; Prof Educ AUTHOR(S): Amy Winston, Rush U; Elizabeth Berry-Kravis, Rush U Med Ctr; Robin Stoner, Rush U; Keri Kwarta, Rush U This session discusses etiology and presentation of Niemann-Pick Disease type C (NPC). Vertical supranuclear gaze palsy (VSGP) is identified as a key disease indicator. Ongoing research with one investigative treatment, 2-HP-β-cyclodextrin, is described. Vestibular test results are presented and correlated with disease-related changes in associated neural structures. Audiologic findings are presented in illustration of disease progression and treatment ototoxicity.
