2018 ASHA CONVENTION PROGRAM BOOK • 137 ORAL SEMINARS • FRIDAY MOTOR SPEECH DISORDERS ACROSS THE LIFESPAN (SLP) 1390 Honing Your Ear: Acquired Apraxia of Speech & Aphasia FR 10:30AM-11:30AM / CC, 154 (Lvl 1) Intermediate; Prof Educ AUTHOR(S): Katarina Haley, U of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Shannon Mauszycki, VA Salt Lake City Health Care System & U of Utah This session is developed by, and presenters invited by, Language Disorders in Adults and Motor Speech Disorders Across the Lifespan. The session purpose is to increase clinician confidence and accuracy in differentiating the speech profile of apraxia of speech from that of aphasia. We review key features that are perceptually salient and some that are more subtle. Distinctions will be clarified and clinical variation illustrated through speech sample presentations. A discussion of practical evaluation strategies will round off the presentation. SPEECH SOUND DISORDERS IN NORMAL-HEARING CHILDREN (SLP) 1400 The Phonological Intervention Taxonomy: How do Phonological Interventions Differ From one Another? FR 10:30AM-11:30AM / CC, 256 (Lvl 2) Intermediate; Research AUTHOR(S): Elise Baker, U of Sydney; Lynn Williams, East Tennessee St U; Sharynne McLeod, Charles Sturt U; Rebecca McCauley, The Ohio St U Interventions for children with speech sound disorders are comprised of elements. The Phonological Intervention Taxonomy was created to compare 15 interventions. Using qualitative methodology, 72 elements were identified (e.g., spoken model). Across interventions there were similarities and differences related to number/type of elements, and presence/absence of common and unique elements. SWALLOWING/FEEDING AND ASSOCIATED DISORDERS (SLP) 1401 Jump-start Your Knowledge: Swallowing Training & Education Tools for Students & Practicing Dysphagia Clinicians FR 10:30AM-11:30AM / CC, 253C (Lvl 2) Introductory; Prof Educ AUTHOR(S): Ianessa Humbert, U of Florida; Rinki Varindani Desai, HealthPRO-Heritage The role of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in dysphagia management has changed considerably over the past decade. Despite being regarded as “swallowing experts”, evidence suggests that some SLPs question their knowledge base in swallowing and swallowing disorders. This session will provide students and clinicians with revolutionary learning tools and evidence-based solutions to jump-start their knowledge in the area of dysphagia management. 1402 NICU Culture Change: Natural Evolution or Starting a Revolution? FR 10:30AM-11:30AM / CC, 204AB (Lvl 2) Intermediate; Prof Educ AUTHOR(S): Emily Mayfield, Mercy Med Ctr; Bethany Kirby, Greater Baltimore Med Ctr This session is developed by, and presenters invited by, Swallowing/Feeding and Associated Disorders. Current evidence supports cue- based vs volume-driven focus for feeding NICU infants. These units needs patterns to evolve. For SLPs, it may feel less like a natural evolution and more like we are starting a revolution. This session discusses common barriers experienced in NICU settings and provide solutions that can be tailored to meet the unique identified barriers of each unit. 1403 Pearls of Wisdom for Clinicians Who Rarely See ALS Patients: Unique & Critical Management Considerations FR 10:30AM-11:30AM / CC, 210C (Lvl 2) Introductory; Prof Educ AUTHOR(S): Paige Nalipinski, Massachusetts General Hosp; Sarah Luppino, Massachusetts General Hosp For clinicians who rarely treat patients with ALS, care can be daunting. In this one hour session, our focus will be on symptom and care management relevant to bulbar dysfunction. We will discuss sialorrhea (medical and nonpharmacological management), laryngospasm, feeding tube timing and quality of life, communication strategies, patient autonomy, resources and appropriateness of speech therapy while sharing two cases. 1404 VFSS Measurement Tool for Swallowing Impairment in Bottle-Fed Babies (BaByVFSSImP): Establishing a Standard FR 10:30AM-11:30AM / CC, 205ABC (Lvl 2) Intermediate; Research AUTHOR(S): Bonnie Martin-Harris, Northwestern U; Maureen Lefton-Greif, Johns Hopkins U Sch of Medicine The aim of this study was to test the construct validity of the first standardized assessment tool (BaByVFSS Impairment Profile, BaByVFSSImP) used for the quantification of swallowing observations made during videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) in bottle-fed babies. Preliminary external validity was explored using correlational analyses between domain scores and swallow-related survey metrics of caregiver burden and quality of life. TELEPRACTICE AND TECHNOLOGY (GI) 1405 Teaching Primary Caregivers in South Africa Beginning Communication Strategies: Developing & Assessing Mobile Health Technology FR 10:30AM-11:30AM / Westin, Commonwealth C Intermediate; Research AUTHOR(S): MaryAnn Romski, Georgia St U; Juanita Bornman, U of Pretoria; Rose Sevcik, Georgia St U; Marika King, Georgia St U; Refilwe Morwane, U of Pretoria; Vann Morris, Georgia St U; Gianluca DeLeo, Augusta U South Africa is a country of linguistic, economic and socio-cultural diversity. Children with developmental disorders face critical barriers to progress in speech-language intervention. This presentation provides an overview of the development and implementation of a communication–based mobile health technology with primary caregivers as a way to enhance speech and language outcomes for children. Service delivery implications will be presented.
