How much CE credit can I earn at the 2023 ASHA Convention?

The maximum amount of continuing education credit you can earn at the 2023 ASHA Convention will be posted in July, after the program is finalized. Typically, the in-person event offers 26–30 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) or 2.6–3.0 ASHA Continuing Education Units (CEUs), depending on the annual event schedule.

Who is eligible for continuing education credit?

If you are registered for the ASHA Convention, whether for the in-person event or only for virtual access, you are eligible for CE credit. Students, SLP and audiology assistants, clinical fellows, and nonmembers are all encouraged to apply for credit. The type of credit you are eligible to earn depends on your profession. See sections below on Professional Development Hours (PDHs) and ASHA Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Exhibitors

Exhibitors using one of their company's complimentary full Convention registrations are eligible to attend sessions and earn continuing education credit. Exhibitors using an Exhibit Hall-only badge are not eligible to attend sessions or earn continuing education credit.

Presenting Authors

As a presenting author, you may claim your own session for credit, earning the same amount of credit as a participant. (We are not able to award credit for the time you spend preparing your presentation.)

What are ASHA CEUs, and who is eligible to earn them?

ASHA CEUs, widely recognized by state licensing boards and other authorities and accepted as demonstration of continued professional development for maintenance of the ASHA CCC, are awarded by ASHA's Continuing Education Board through the ASHA CE Registry. One ASHA CEU (1.0 ASHA CEU) is awarded for 10 hours of continuing education activity.

You are eligible to earn ASHA CEUs if you are any one of these:

• ASHA member, Life Member, or International Affiliate
• ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) holder
• Licensed or credentialed by a national, state, or provincial regulatory agency (e.g., a state board of education) to practice speech-language pathology or audiology
• Clinical Fellow supervised by an individual holding the ASHA CCC
• Currently enrolled in a master's or doctoral program in speech-language pathology or audiology

Eligible persons must join the ASHA CE Registry to receive ASHA CEUs. Joining the Registry is optional. If you are eligible to earn ASHA CEUs, but choose not to join the Registry, you may receive professional development hours (PDHs).

What are PDHs, and who is eligible to receive them?

PDHs are an alternative unit of measure of continuing education activities. Anyone who is registered for Convention is eligible to receive PDHs. One PDH equals 1 hour of continuing education. PDHs for the ASHA Convention count toward ASHA certification maintenance. Check with your state license board to learn whether PDHs will count toward state license renewal. Whether you are earning ASHA CEUs or PDHs at the ASHA Convention, you will follow the same reporting procedures and deadlines.

What sessions count for credit?

Any ASHA Convention session that has a 5-digit session code carries CE credit. In-person session codes end with the letter L. On-demand/virtual session codes end with the letter V.

Ticketed pre-Convention education events, such as symposia and workshops, are considered part of the ASHA Convention for continuing education purposes, and you would claim credit for them in the same way you claim for other sessions. They carry a 4-digit session code.

Sessions that count for CE credit include:

• Master Classes
• 1-hour seminars
• Technical Research and Technical Clinical sessions
• Technical Demos
• Posters (On-demand/virtual iPosters and in-person poster Q&A sessions)
• Pre-Convention events

If there is no 4-digit or 5-digit session code, the activity does not carry CE credit. Activities that do not carry CE credit include, but are not limited to, the Opening General Session; the Awards Ceremony; exhibits; Caring Square community service activities; board, committee, and council meetings; and the Graduate School Fair and NSSLHA activities.

Ethics and Supervision Credits

ASHA has identified which in-person and virtual/on-demand sessions count toward the certification maintenance requirements for Ethics and Supervision. These sessions are marked in the online program planner (search for Ethics credit or Supervision credit). As long as you meet the December 1 reporting deadline, your Certificate of Completion/event report will display these details, and if you use the ASHA CE Registry, Ethics and Supervision credits will be automatically reported there as well.

If you use the CE Registry and report a session that counts for Ethics or Supervision, you will see up to three separate entries on your CE Transcript: (1) number of ASHA CEUs earned at Convention that count for Ethics, (2) number of ASHA CEUs earned at Convention that count for Supervision, and (3) number of remaining ASHA CEUs earned at Convention. The total of these three values will correspond to the total number of instructional hours shown on your Certificate of Completion/event report.

If you track your own PDHs, you can save your Certificate of Completion/event report for your files and self-report your participation for the Ethics and Supervision requirements.

How are my CE credits calculated?

The number of credits you earn is determined by the duration of the educational sessions you attend. Your total hours are converted to PDHs or ASHA CEUs. Both PDHs and ASHA CEUs are rounded down to the nearest half hour. So, if you spend a total of 16 hours and 45 minutes in education sessions, you will earn 16.5 PDHs or 1.65 ASHA CEUs.

You must attend sessions in full in order to claim credit for them. The system will not allow you to claim credit for two in-person sessions that overlap in time according to the program.

The time equivalents of each session type are:

• Master Classes (in-person only): 2 hours
• 1-hour seminars (in-person only): 1 hour
• Technical Research and Technical Clinical sessions (in-person or on-demand/virtual): 30 minutes
• Technical Demos (on-demand/virtual only): 30 minutes
• Virtual Poster Presentations (on-demand/virtual iPoster with pre-recorded audio presentation/narration): 15 minutes
• In-Person Poster Q&A Sessions: 15 minutes
• Pre-Convention events: Variable depending on event time

How do I report my CE credit?

To receive credit and earn ASHA CEUs or professional development hours, you must enter your activities in the ASHA Learning Center. You may begin reporting your credit on November 10, when the on-demand/virtual sessions become available. This is also the only way to obtain a Certificate of Completion. You may enter your activities after each session, or you may enter all your activities at once after the Convention is over.

1. Keep a record of the in-person sessions you attend or on-demand sessions you view. You will need each session's five-digit session number.
2. No later than December 1, 2023, log in to the ASHA Learning Center and follow the instructions provided to enter your sessions.
3. Once you have finished the reporting process, you will be able to print your Event Report. (The Event Report is the official report of your participation and serves as the Certificate of Completion.)

Activities must be entered and finalized no later than 11:59 p.m., ET, Thursday, December 1, 2023. If you are a member of the ASHA CE Registry, credits will be reported to the Registry no later than December 23.

Everyone should follow this process—including ASHA members, students, Clinical Fellows, audiology and speech language pathology assistants, and nonmembers. It is the only way to officially document your attendance and participation at this event. You do not need to join the ASHA CE Registry to document your CE activities using this process. If you need a record of the activities in which you participated—or think you may need a record in the future—you must report for credit by December 1.

There is a non-refundable $50 fee to initiate an appeal if you do not report by December 1, and appeals are adjudicated individually by the Continuing Education Board and may not be granted. Per ASHA's Scientific and Professional Education Board, appeals will be accepted only for 6 months from the published reporting/completion date for the program.

Certificates of Completion

Certificates of Completion are available to all attendees who report their activities in the ASHA Learning Center by December 1. You will be able to save or print your certificate once you complete the continuing education reporting process. We strongly recommend that everyone retrieve their Certificate of Completion, since it serves as your official record of the sessions you attended.

CCC Maintenance

ASHA CEUs or PDHs accrued at Convention will count toward CCC maintenance, provided you are in your 3-year maintenance interval. Please note that if you were initially certified during 2023, your CCC maintenance interval begins on January 1, 2024.

Florida, Ohio and South Carolina Licensees and CE Broker

If you are licensed in Florida, Ohio or South Carolina, participate in the CE Registry and have provided your license number to ASHA, your ASHA CEUs from Convention will automatically be reported to CE Broker. You must participate in the CE Registry for your credit to be sent to CE Broker.

American Academy of Audiology (AAA)

ASHA Professional Development is approved by the American Academy of Audiology to offer Academy CEUs for this activity. The program is worth a maximum of [TBD] CEUs. Academy approval of this continuing education activity is based on course content only and does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products, or clinical procedure, or adherence of the event to the Academy's Code of Ethics. Any views that are presented are those of the presenter/CE Provider and not necessarily of the American Academy of Audiology.

To earn AAA CEUs, report your CE activities in the online ASHA Learning Center (and confirm and finalize your session report) and then complete the AAA CEUs web form. There is no charge by ASHA for this service.
